What is galvanized pipe used for?

Galvanized pipes are often used in plumbing systems for carrying liquid or gaseous substances. These pipes are made of galvanized steel which is an alloy of tin, lead and magnesium. This corrosion process can be triggered when there is contact between the galvanized pipe and water for an extended period. How do you repair galvanized steel pipes?
